There are an increasing number of companies, both large and small, now offering supplements for pets. The reason is clear, the trend in pet food, treat, and overall health has closely modeled that of the two-legged variety. As we learn more about how human diet and environment affects our health, we want the same for our furry companions.
Do companion animals need supplements? That certainly is a choice left up to each owner, however, as with humans there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that many cooked and processed foods for animals lack some of the essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes or Omega fatty acids recommended for help insure the best opportunity for the healthiest, stress-free life for your animal. The correct supplement can help rectify that deficiency.
The issue we faced was choosing which amongst the large number available on the market. Unfortunately, the supplement industry for pets is much-less regulated than it is for humans. To help address this The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), a national non-profit organization, was formed in 2001 with a simple mission: To promote the health and well-being of non-human food chain animals that are given animal health supplements by establishing federal and state regulations which are Fair, Reasonable, Responsible and nationally Consistent.
The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) works with state, federal and international governments to create regulations for animal health supplements and build a legislative framework for the animal health industry. The organization seeks also to educate consumers and manufacturers about pet supplements, and provides recommendations for appropriate usage. The cornerstone of the NASC members’ pledge is compliance with the NASC Quality System Requirements. This program provides a framework of Good Manufacturing Practices for quality assurance and product safety, and a commitment to ongoing research and development that stands alone in the industry.
To help our customers, and ourselves, navigate the large number of emerging companies offering products, we will only offer supplements from manufacturers that are NASC certified ensuring that their entire sourcing and production practices meet the high standards of the council, and the standards that we as pet owners expect.
